5 Unexpected Things I Learned About Life Through TED

I saw this article when browsing through the net in this morning. Its quite meaningful for me. But the beautiful statements can be very distracting. So here are five unexpected things learned about life through TED talks:

We spend so much time thinking about what we want and working to get it that this just doesn't seem like it could be true. But no matter how important the decision, there are dozens of irrelevant and inconsequential things that influence us even though we think we're the one in the driver's seat.

Dan Ariely, a behavioral economist, shows us a few funny (but also scary) examples of how people aren't actually as rational as they think. For example, if you offer a focus group the choice between a free trip to Rome or a free trip to Paris, the results would be pretty evenly split. What if you add the option of a free trip to Rome with coffee included? That seemingly meaningless addition to the list of choices makes that all-inclusive trip to Rome look more attractive by comparison, and a majority of people choose Rome over Paris. Did Rome suddenly get a lot better? Do people care that much about a free cup of coffee? No. But subconsciously people compared the two most similar options and chose the best of the two, completely forgetting about Paris.

Favorite quotes: "If you ever go bar hopping, who do you want to take with you? You want a slightly uglier version of yourself." and "Useless options help people figure out what they want."

There's a certain amount of secrecy that comes with being an entrepreneur, since our ideas are what set us apart. However, the conventional wisdom is to share your goals (even if it's just with a spouse or trusted associate) so that they're real and someone can help hold you accountable. Derek Sivers, founder of CD Baby, says to keep your goals to yourself. In a fascinating bit of psychology, it turns out that just saying our goal to another person gives us a positive feeling that is the same as if we actually accomplished something. Therefore, we're not as motivated to keep working.

Favorite quote: "...understand that your mind mistakes the talking for the doing."

A corporation can spend a million dollars in advertising and development only to find that a simple, modest effort has a bigger influence. Rory Sutherland, vice chairman of Ogilvy Group, points out that small actions have more capacity to change things than big ones. I'm all about finding the amazing, overlooked little details in life, so I found it fascinating to see that applied to everything from airport signs and elevators to conquering hunger in developing nations. Want people to remember your hotel over others? The million-dollar renovation will go unnoticed by most people, while something as small as giving them control over the music that plays in the elevator will make them spread the story to all their friends.

Favorite quotes: "Very, very small changes can have disproportionately huge effects. And equally, enormous mergers can actually accomplish bugger-all." and "Every corporation should have a Chief Detail Officer, and every government should have a Ministry of Detail."

There are so many tests for figuring out what type of personality you have. Are you an INTJ, ENFP, a thinker, a doer? The list goes on. Philip Zimbardo, the researcher behind the infamous Stanford Prison Experiment, shares how the way we think about time influences our actions more than we think. The most successful people tend to be future-oriented, meaning everything is about future rewards. This is great for building a business or earning money, but can take its toll on family and personal life. Zimbardo talks about how to change the way we think about time. Unlike changing your personality, it's not a hard thing to do.

Favorite quote: "Future gives you WINGS... to soar to new destinations and challenges. Present hedonism gives you ENERGY... to explore people, places, self, & sensuality.""

Christien Meindertsma tracked one pig to find out what besides meat this animal contributed to the world. The answers are quite weird. Everything from bread and soap to bullets and artificial heart valves has a little bit of pig in it. OK, so this one might sound more like the answer to a trivia question, but it actually got me thinking about the lifespan of what I do and how I'm sharing a part of myself every day I post my thoughts, finds and adventures.

Favorite quote: "185 products are made from pigs .. it's odd that we don't treat these pigs as absolute kings and queens."

A small Breakthrough

Went to Batu Cave yesterday together with their IWS friend, Daisuke Kiyohara from Japan. He came to Malaysia for visit to his girlfriend, Lily. So, before he's going back, they decided to take him go Batu Cave for visit. Luppy them asked whether we want to join or not, thinking of the damn hot weather, we all don't feel like want to join but thinking of more people more fun, lastly we joined.

Been there twice *included this time. First time was last year Thaipusam Day. Went there with Ho and Jyh Pei. The place crowded with Indian, of course...but we went there 'tumpang gembira'. Imagine you walking in the crowd under the hot sun, everyone are very hot and sweating, and you were squeezing between the crowd...
But this time just got very few people because there's no any event so just some tourists. So we all climbed up there. Then we saw a corner that display snakes and you can pay RM10 for taking pictures with the snake. Luppy and Kiyo shared for one snake and nicole and i shared one.

For me its a bit expensive just to take pictures with the snake. The thing is i want to break through the fear of the snake. My fear of snake not until like Ophidiophobia. I still can touch them. Just scare they bite. Haha~who didn't scare the bites?

I still remembered last time i got shocked when i touched a snake body in the snake temple in Penang. That time, i tried to touch its body and i got scared by myself. The feel was like when you touched the belt, a cold-nice pattern belt. Its weird and disgusting. A small thought in my head when taking photos with it was putting my lips on its head, but to prevent the unexpected accident from happen, i didn't take the risk. So another fun day and small breakthrough with a young yellowish anaconda around nicole's neck and mine.

Taking photo on the stairs.

Nicole and I with the young anaconda around our necks.

Hai Anaconda, I don't afraid to touch you anymore. XD

Dancing light stripes

Played with my phone with the highway lights. Although i'm not very like its applications much but i'm glad that  the camera effect can turn out like these. Its need more time to capture the images. So while i capture the images, i turn and spin the camera and its all came out like these. The lights became stripes. I love the effects.

Killing Time 2#

Remember the first day of the short holiday? We didn't really planned the second trip! At first we like just wanted to accompany our miss Evelyn to go interviewed at the Oriental Daily. While we waiting her to interviewed, we went to CapSquare since it just behind the building to take our breakfast and have a walk.

While we having our breakfast, we waiting for our miss Annie from wangsa maju to join us. And after that, we had no idea where to go, we want to hang out and we just speak out a places that we haven't visit before, with the help of gps to search for the place and off we go! Some of our suggested Sentul Park. So we all like: Great! Lets go! its because we saw the place came out in the magazine and have nice buildings which SUITE us, the design students to go there and have a look.

When at outside, we wondered is inside there really Sentul Park? Like it looks just a common park outside. Then we went deep inside and saw several historical buildings built with bricks. So we were sure that its really the place we find. There have KL Performing Arts Center (KLPAC), Sentul park Koi Centre and Yuritei Japanese Tea House, and offices that doing networking or something. But the thing is the building's design, its green and sustainable!

For other people, they might be thinking that what so special about it? its just a beautiful or special building anyway. We don't expect that got this kind of buildings in our country. We were wrong, they just haven't discovered yet. The buildings are old building and don't know how many years old already, and they reuse it again. They maintained the beauty of the outlook of the building and built something inside. Examples, an office. Like the buildings, oh yeah and the entrance of the office. Tube like shaped walkway to the office. Very nice~~ working in such a special place, surrounded by tranquility. Sentul park Koi Centre and Yuritei Japanese Tea House also really nice...nicer than the Bukit Tinggi Japanese Garden. The garden and japanese house inside really breathtaking. I heard the problem that always faced by the visitors or photographers who want to go inside to have a look, are always chased out by the guard. We are mentioned that the place is not open for public. But still, we had our great time there.

The historical buildings built with bricks, isn't it adorable?
unfortunately, people are not allowed to step inside the buildings because of the buildings were built long time ago and it would collapse anything. A group of model photography was just warning by the guard so that they not going inside when we get there.

There's a maze. Its the beginning when we were going to crazyy!
It's raining day and we still want to play in it.
Suddenly the rain got heavy and it's a maze you see...

Nice exterior.
Love the combination of plants and human made.

The KL Performing Arts Center's interior.
Below is the cafe and upper floor is the office.
A place for activities like performances, creative workshops, rehearsals, exhibitions and screenings.
How great working in such great environment.

Nice resting place beside the lake, with wire mashed seats, made me flashed back the MSID competition. Yewww... but great memories...
miss Annie is feeding the mascots (ducks) of the place.
Too bad its raining day~
 the office

the japanese house with koi pond.

It doesn't really fulfill our desires. We want more! So we went to Tugu Negara to have a look. There were quite many of tourist from other countries. But most of them are from India I guess. Felt very weird when you saw them together with the building, you feel like you are in other country! hmm... nothing much to see and the purpose we went there is to see the sculpture. Still remember it always appeared in our primary textbooks.
